Of course, Cook County does not! There are 6 major property tax classifications, 9 major tax incentive classifications and some 250 minor assessment codes to identify property usage in Cook County. No wonder what we have is incomprehensible. One of the big reasons why Cook County taxes are so high is the infamous “multiplier”. Your assessed value is multiplied by this number, which makes the amount upon which a commercial or industrial property pay taxes even higher than the market value of the property. The “multiplier” has increased from 1.8445 to 2.9786 in the last 25 years.
